Mandatory Abuse Reporting (England)

Posted: 7th January 2025

Yesterday, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper stated her intention to make it mandatory to report child sexual abuse, with professional and criminal sanctions for failing to report or covering up such abuse. Read her full statement here.

SACPA and the wider BSA Group, which includes the Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA), support any measures that will keep children and young people safer and reduce the trauma that survivors of institutional child sexual abuse continue to live with.

BSA member schools are already required to sign up to a Commitment to Care Charter and the Group supported the recommendations of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) report, including the introduction of mandatory reporting, with BSA Honorary President Lord Black raising the issue when the new government was sworn in.
