Course outline:
This seminar seeks to consider this topic through the lens of education, offering basic guidance for professionals within an educational setting.
Learning outcomes:
- to help staff to understand and respond appropriately to CYP presenting with Gender Dysphoria and those who are Gender-Questioning in other ways;
- to clarify language around the topic as well as the legal requirements for schools (with particular reference to the Equality Act 2010);
- to review the most recent thinking and research around the best way to support and safeguard CYP with Gender Dysphoria.

Nicola O’Brien, Director of Safeguarding and DSL, Felsted School
Nicola O’Brien is the Director of Safeguarding and DSL at Felsted School in Essex. She has worked in education for nearly 25 years, mostly within boarding leadership and safeguarding. She is Chair of a Special Interest Group on Gender Dysphoria for the Association of Child Protection Professionals and has founded a cluster group to support DSLs in independent schools in Essex. In addition, she has NSPCC accreditation as a safeguarding trainer, does safeguarding consultancy work and is a trained supervisor.
