Safeguarding in the “metaverse”

14 May @ 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Course outline:

The metaverse and web 3 technologies help children explore opportunities for immersive education and recreation.  But what of safeguarding?

Do those who have particular roles with children and their families and have responsibilities for safeguarding really feel confident that they have the knowledge and understanding of the emerging benefits and safeguarding risks that the metaverse brings?

This webinar aims to upskill colleagues who support children and young people using virtual reality to get the best from this ever-evolving technology and to anticipate how and in what way different groups of children may be affected when using this emerging set of technologies.

Training topics will include:

  • What is the metaverse and web 3 technologies?
  • The benefits and risks of immersive digital technology
  • How do web 3 technologies used by children influence our responses to specific wellbeing and safeguarding concerns?
  • What does this mean for contextual safeguarding approaches?
  • How should knowledge and understanding of emerging technology influence our policy, practice and communication with children and their families?

Learning outcomes:

  • Improved understanding of the metaverse
  • More effective impact on development of policy and practice decisions in response to new technology and contextual environments
  • Increased confidence in demonstrating the right balance between benefit and potential risk with emerging technologies
  • More secure knowledge-base on which to draw for the preventative education agenda and keeping adults, family and parents informed of risks and benefits

Audience: Suitable for all colleagues who have regular contact with children and specific roles in pastoral care and safeguarding, including leadership, governance and oversight roles for safeguarding.
